Julie Strietelmeier - my hero. The-Gadgeteer was having a contest to win a Green Palm Centro, and all that needed to be done was leave a comment on the article about what readers would be interested in seeing for reviews in the coming year.

Well, if the suspense isn't killing you, then here it is: I WON! Julie picked me as the winner and I could not be happier! Especially since I received no gadgets this year for being a good [blogger] boy. I am excited to open my post-xmas gift and fiddle with its buttons!

I have been a reader of the-gadgeteer for years, and its always been a good source for reviews and tidbits for the everyday gadget user. If you are not a reader, your loss! But, its not to late, head on over to Julie's The-Gadgeteer and start your journey!

T-Mobile G2? Give it to me.

Styling wise, this looks like some other phones designed by HTC - but who cares? It's what is under the hood that matters. The G1, on its own is one of the only phones to date with its own dedicated graphics processor. Although, we have not see devs take advantage of it game-wise, I am sure this will change with the new paid-for apps in the Market in 2009. Regardless, if this is the G2, hand it over!

Quote:

Yesterday, the T-Mobile blog CellPhone Signal posted a list of new features it claimed would be in the G2, with the supposed date of the device’s release: January 26, 2009 (OMG!). Then BGR just posted the device’s (look-like Photoshop’s) picture and told us that the launch date has been pushed back to April due to software issues.

As you can see, this device has no physical QWERTY keyboard and full touchscreen. The trackball at the bottom is going to stay. After the G2, a G3 handset is supposed to follow.

Samsung T929 Leica on T-Mobile
In Forum: Other Communicators

Its nice to see T-mobile come up with some viable 3G phones for their new network. This is known as a dumbphone - essentially one of their (Samsung) flip style phones with a large touch screen, bigger camera a few more features, and none of the smarts. Sounds good to some of you, doesn't it?

Quote:

Are you ready for another touchscreen phone? As if the LG Vu, Samsung Instinct, HTC Touch Diamond, Apple iPhone, BlackBerry Storm, and Nokia Tube weren't enough to get you going, T-Mobile seems to be adding another touchscreen phone to its collection.

The Samsung Pixon is yet another in a continuing line of touchscreen phones, taking on an appearance similar to the Samsung Omnia. Well, it looks like the Pixon is going to T-Mo and it's picking up a new name along the way. Rather than keeping the Pixon moniker, the T-Mobile version of the phone will be sold as the T-Mobile T929 Leica.

Yes, Leica. That's because this phone doesn't rely heavily on smartphone features or cool applications, per se, but rather on its giant display and terrific camera. The Sony Ericsson C905 is not the only 8-megapixel camera on the block, because the Samsung T929 Leica is rocking an 8MP shooter as well.

To keep up with the wireless data game, the Samsung Pixon is also equipped with 3G that'll be more than happy to enjoy T-Mobile's fancy new network. Nothing has been confirmed just yet, but there's a good chance that T-Mobile will be selling the Samsung T929 Leica soon. At least, that's what the shutterbugs are hoping.

Blackberry Storm

Even though I dislike Verizon because I can, this is one of the best looking phones out there. Nicely thought out, maybe a little thick, but it fits the profile - if this comes to T-Mobile, I just might have to drop my G1 to try it. (FCC just passed the GSM) That would make 6-7 cellphones this year for me alone. Gotta try them all. Is what I does.

(Warming: Uesless Vzw info to follow)

As promised, Vodafone has officially announced a November delivery order date for its BlackBerry Storm -- November 14, to be specific. Pre-orders are being taken (as they are in the States), so if you want to be in the first batch of Brits to rock this thing, it might be a good idea to go ahead and get on a list lest the throngs of humanity trying to get one on launch day end up harshing your chances. On a related note, Vodafone's better (or worse) half Verizon has come forward with a surprisingly affordable data plan -- GlobalEmail -- that'll allow unlimited web browsing, MMS, and visual voicemail both in the US and a laundry list of countries around the world for $69.99 (or $64.99 when tied to a voice plan). Speaking of voice, Verizon's also announced a new Global Value Plan that hooks you up with discounted minutes abroad for $4.99 a month. Seeing how the Storm is Verizon's first handset with global 3G, this new action should see some serious play.

T-Mobile G1: It's not a Sidekick or an iPhone - it's both
In Forum: Other Communicators

I will be posting my review of the G1 this weekend after having it for nearly a week. I typically know what a phone is or isn't in this time frame, and I rarely do reviews. But, considering the slew of lousy reviews from other blogs, I feel it is necessary.

Most other blogs that are posting reviews of the G1 are constantly and consistently mentioning other communicator-type devices. Not only does this create a mockery of the device, but brings the review down to a pissing contest, which it should not be. This is why I am posting this first.. it will be the only time I mention another device while posting about the G1. As it should be.

A review should be about what something is, not what it does or does not do because something else was released by some other company or carrier. Everyone seems to be on a trend of wanting something to be everything else. A mashup - their "everything device". Considering the G1 and who is involved, it is likely the only "instrument" capable of doing so.

Look for the review by Sunday evening!

HourDoc SMS Clock-In System

Genius - now that SMS services are picking up (unless you are a lousy company like GoLiveMobile and have no clue how to run a company) you get something useful like this. Not only is the virtual office/company is nearly a necessity for keeping costs down (free junkfood) you can now clock your hours with a text message. Actually, I don't think I really care - I just wanted to mention how lousy GoLiveMobile is!

Quote:

Web-based employee tracking company HourDoc.com has just released a new service that will enable employees working on remote projects to clock-in and out by sending a simple text message. The system consists of four commands: “in”, “out”, “bin” or “bout” meaning “clocking in”, “clocking out”, “taking a break/clock in” or “taking a break/clock out.” Obviously, this SMS system is reserved only for the most anal retentive and overbearing of bosses, but I don't see how it would be effective in the first place. Couldn't you just clock back in from lunch while sitting at the bar?

Samsung's T919 for T-Mobile
In Forum: Other Communicators

T-Mobile has finally got their 3G head out of their ass. Now that they have got over releasing 3G flip phones, we have the G1, and now the Samsung T919. It has 3G, AGPS, 5MP!.. and of course, a touch screen. If this is anything like the stuff Samsung puts into VZM, we are screwed - but lets face it, VZM typically screws up a perfectly good phone with their shitty UI.. so, Tmo, here is tipping the 3G hat off to ya!

Quote:

We're really pleased to see that T-Mobile's apparently going to be wasting no time in stocking up its nascent 3G roll out with pretty glorious hardware, starting at the top of the feature phone heap with the T919 that we've been hearing about for a while. TmoNews says that we can expect the F480-like bar to show up on November 10 for $149 on contract, which seems damned pretty reasonable for a phone with AWS HSDPA, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, and a full touchscreen. Don't get us wrong, we'll still take a G1 -- but this is a close second right now as AWS wares go. Okay, fine, not so close, but you know what we're saying.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (looks... communicatoryyy)
In Forum: Nokia Communicators

Still waiting for Nokia's version of the sidekick or iphone.. this is what they release to us. An S60 (version 5) release of the OS stuffed in there like a pimento olive. ITs got a US GSM version, so who knows.. with a little luck, T-mo might be seeing this puppy.

Quote:

While it may not be Nokia's first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we've alternately known as the "Tube" throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition -- the fourth major overhaul of Nokia's ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It'll be available in three versions -- European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only -- and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on "early next year" at a to-be-announced price.

The long-awaited HTC Dream, the first commercial handset running Google's Android operating system, will be coming to T-Mobile as the G1 for $179 on October 22nd. Read on for the details, and you can decide whether or not the competition is a good thing.
